Department of Biology
In the Department of Biology (DBIO – the study of Life for life), we combine teaching with research at all levels of biological organisation, from molecules to ecosystems, including the interactions between living organisms. In addition to the academic and technical staff directly affiliated with DBIO, the Department also draws on the expertise of researchers from a wide range of disciplines, in our mission to ensure teaching of the highest standard, underpinned by current and interdisciplinary research, in both its fundamental and applied dimensions.
DBIO also places a strong emphasis on practical teaching, through laboratory classes, fieldwork, and other forms of direct engagement with the key methodologies used in Biological Sciences.
DBIO is involved in a number of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and is most directly involved in three Bachelor’s degree programmes (Biology, Human Biology and Biology and Geology), four Master’s degrees (Conservation Biology, Management and Conservation of Natural Resources, Aquaculture Engineering and Management and Bioarchaeology) and also in the PhD in Biology.
Biological Sciences play a strategic role in understanding and addressing some of the greatest challenges facing humanity. From molecular genetics to global ecosystems, Biology is a key discipline in responding to today’s most pressing concerns, contributing to fundamental advances in areas as diverse as biodiversity conservation, sustainable food production, and climate change mitigation. Education and research in Biology are essential for understanding the interactions between living organisms and their environment, promoting the sustainable management of natural resources, and helping to build a more resilient future for generations to come.
