Agregação Exams | Specialist Title Exams | PhD under the Special Arrangement for Submission of a Thesis
You are not obligated to attend a course to be awarded the title of Specialist or PhD under the special arrangement for submission of a thesis and that of Agregado . The requirements to apply for and be awarded an academic title are explained below.
CANDIDATES
An application for taking the Agregação Exams may be submitted by those who meet all of the following requirements:
- Must hold a PhD degree;
- Must have a curriculum of outstanding merit that demonstrates, in particular, relevant and advanced research activity, training or supervision and be the author of scientific papers of recognised quality after having obtained their PhD degree.
Candidates who meet all of the following requirements may also apply for the Agregação Exams:
- Be an associate or assistant professor at a university or a coordinating, lead or assistant researcher of the Portuguese scientific research track:
- Must have a curriculum of outstanding merit that demonstrates, in particular, relevant and advanced research activity, training or supervision and be the author of scientific papers of recognised quality.
HOW TO APPLY
Applications must be submitted by sending a registered letter to the University of Évora's Academic Services Department or via the GesDoc platform, for UÉ faculty members.
Candidates applying for award of the title of Agregado must submit the following documents in electronic format:
- Application Template for acceptance for the Agregação Exams;
- Curriculum vitae;
- Report on a curricular unit, group of curricular units or study cycle related to the knowledge field or specialisation in which the exams are to be taken;
- A detailed summary of a seminar or lesson about a topic related to the knowledge field or specialisation in which the exams are to be taken, and discussion thereof;
- Papers included in curricula which the candidate deems most relevant.
Candidates may only apply for the title of Agregado in the knowledge fields or specialisations for which the University of Évora is allowed to award the title of Doctor .
Academic processes for the Agregação Exams follow the procedures set out in the guide attached to Circular Letter 2/2009.
Candidates who are not UÉ faculty members must pay the fee indicated in the Fee Schedule in force.

CANDIDATES
The special Regime for submission of a thesis applies to all those who meet the requirements for admission to the cycle of studies leading to a doctoral degree in the areas in which the University of Évora is accredited. Candidates may apply for public defence of their thesis without enrolling/attending a study programme and without the supervision required for a PhD programme.
HOW TO APPLY
PhD applications under the special regime must be submitted through the Academic Services Department, addressed to the Rector of the University of Évora, together with the following documents:
- Curriculum Vitae;
- A copy of your transcript of records, duly authenticated;
- A copy of your thesis in .pdf format (the file must not be encrypted).
Application will be forwarded to the Scientific Board of the Institute of Research and Advanced Training (IIFA), who will assess the curriculum vitae and the suitability of the candidate thesis for award of the title of Doctor. Should the application for public defence of the thesis be accepted, the candidate will have 30 days, following notification, to register the PhD thesis with the Academic Services Department by submitting the documents referred to in the Application Regulations and paying the respective fee, that is, twice the annual tuition fee indicated in the Doctoral Notice and request the title.
Once submitted, the documents will be forwarded to the IIFA and the process for public defence will be carried out in accordance with the procedures established for other doctoral degree programmes offered by the University of Évora.

The public examinations for the exercise of scientific coordination functions are designed to assess the merit of the candidate's scientific work and their ability to coordinate scientific research and postgraduate training programmes. They are provided for in Section II of the Scientific Research Career Statute, published by Decree-Law no. 124/99, of 20th April, amended by Law no. 157/99, of 14th September.
CANDIDATES
You can apply for the qualifying exams:
Research staff with an indefinite public employment contract who are the authors of meritorious scientific or technological work;
Any individual who holds a doctoral degree and is the author of scientific or technological work of merit, carried out after obtaining a doctorate.
HOW TO APPLY
Applications can be submitted at any time by submitting an online application and uploading the following documents:
The candidate's curriculum vitae;
A certified photocopy of the document proving that the applicant holds a doctoral degree or is a researcher with an indefinite public service contract;
Scientific and technological work that the candidate considers relevant for the purposes of the provisions;
A proposal by the candidate that deals jointly with a research programme and a postgraduate programme in the scientific area of the test.

CANDIDATES
The title of Specialist is awarded as part of polytechnic education. The title attests to the quality and specific importance of curricula in a particular area to teach at a polytechnic higher education institution.
Candidates who meet all of the following requirements can apply for award of the title of Specialist:
- Have entry level university training and at least 10 years’ experience in the field in which the exams are to be taken;
- Have a curriculum of proven quality and relevance for practising in the area in question.
HOW TO APPLY
Applications must be submitted by sending a registered letter to the University of Évora's Academic Services Department or via the GesDoc platform, for faculty members of the UÉ São João de Deus School of Nursing (ESESJD).
Applications must be validated by the University's Academic Services Department with submission of the following documents:
- Candidate application form (Form T-012 );
- One copy of your curriculum, specifying your career path, papers written and work carried out and, where applicable, any scientific, technological and pedagogical activities carried out;
- One copy of a publication in the respective area for presentation, critical analysis and discussion;
- One copy of each of the papers indicated in your curriculum and that you deem relevant;
- One copy of your curriculum and the publication in electronic format;
- A copy of your Nursing Diploma and Equivalence Certificate of the Higher Education Diploma in Nursing;
- A copy of your licence;
- Statement indicating your time of service;
- A copy of your transcript of records.
Candidates who are not UÉ faculty members must pay the fee indicated in the Fee Schedule in force.
