Course Overview

The Master's Degree in Teaching Physics and Chemistry in the 3rd Cycle of Elementary Education and in Secondary Education, qualifies for teaching in recruitment group 510, Physics and Chemistry, under the terms of the Legal Regime of Professional Qualification for Teaching in Early Childhood Education and Elementary and Secondary Education. The curricular structure includes four areas of training: Teaching Area (Physics and Chemistry), Specific Didactics, General Educational Area and Introduction to Educational Practice, which take form of several curricular units to be taught over four semesters, on a working basis. Supervised Teaching Practice (PES) takes place in primary and secondary schools wich have protocols with the University of Évora, providing the students with real contact with teaching practice. The PES is the subject of a report, of an investigative nature, subject to approval in public tests. This Master's degree offers solid training designed to deal with current curricular challenges in the areas of Physics and Chemistry, require articulation between the different scientific areas, addressing real problems and considering that teachers and students are responsible for critically analyzing complexities of difference and equity, in order to promote sustainable educational changes. The assessment is mainly oriented towards learning and the regulation of teaching and learning processes. The methodologies take the student as an active participant in the learning processes throughout the course. It shows close relationships between teaching and research and the aim of the curricular proposals, taking advantage of digital technologies.

Career Prospects

Graduates with a Master's Degree in Teaching Physics and Chemistry in the 3rd Cycle of Basic Education and Secondary Education are professionally qualified to teach in recruitment group 510 (Physics and Chemistry), an essential condition for carrying out teaching activities, under the terms of the Legal Framework for Professional Qualification for Teaching in Pre-School Education and Basic and Secondary Education, approved by Decree-Law nº 79/2014, of May 14, with the amendments introduced by Decree-Law nº 9-A 25 of February 14.

Specific Entry Requirements

I. The specific conditions for admission to this master's degree are regulated by the Legal Regime of Professional Qualification for Teaching in Pre-school Education and Basic and Secondary Education.
Those who comply with the following requirements can apply for this master's degree:
a) who holds a higher academic qualification referred to in subparagraphs a) to c) of paragraph 1 of Article 17 of Decree-Law nº 74/2006, taking into account the successive changes as stated in DL nº 79/2014, May 14th and in Decree-Law nº 9-A/2025, February 14th;
b) whoever meets the conditions referred to in paragraph d) of paragraph 1 of Article 17 of Decree-Law no. 74/2006, and has at least has at least 120 ECTS of training in both disciplinary areas (Physics and Chemistry) and neither of them with less than 30 ECTS;
c) who, having less than 120 ECTS of training in both disciplinary areas, have at least 90 ECTS of training (75% of the minimum requirements) and neither of them with less than 22.5 ECTS, and must obtain the remaining ECTS after enrollment.

II. A general admission condition is oral and written command of the Portuguese language and mastery of the essential rules of logical and critical argumentation, in accordance with the legislation in force for this purpose. This condition will be certified by combining a written Portuguese language test with an interview. In both cases, the candidate must obtain approval. The written test and interview are mandatory for everyone, regardless of their previous training or professional situation. The application can also be made by presenting a certificate of approval, issued by another institution. of higher education, in which the candidate has taken tests for this same purpose, considering the conditions set out in the legislation in force for this purpose. The written test and interview to assess Portuguese language proficiency will take place on April 7th (1st phase), July 9th (2nd phase) and September 10th (3rd phase) at a location and time to be announced.

III. In the application documentation, it is necessary to present the certificate of qualifications detailing the credits of each curricular unit, in order to be able to verify the minimum training credits established for entry into the Course determined by the Legal Regime of Professional Qualification for Teaching in Early Childhood Education and Elementary and Secondary Education (DL 79/2014 of May 14, in its current version)
