Course Overview
Developing skills oriented to employability, career progression in the fields of sociological intervention, and for the pursuit of the 3rd cycle studies (PhD), the Master in Sociology enables to conceptualize social reality with sociological thinking, as well as to ensure the management of the human resources of organizations and territories, from a development perspective.
Masters students in Sociology will also develop skills to design and/or coordinate fundamental or applied sociological research studies, in the organizational and societal domain, as well as to plan and evaluate social and organizational intervention programs and projects, and also to carry out studies of social and prospective diagnosis for organizations and territories. In the same way, they will be able to provide technical advice and/or specialized training to companies and other organizations in the areas of human resources, organizational and territorial development, as well as to integrate and stimulate discussion and research networks.
In addition to general skills, the specialization in 'Regional Development' allows the development of competences to:
- Discuss the development of the territory through the sociological theories;
- Evaluate supranational, national and regional public policies that frame the development of territories;
- Use sociological intervention tools in territories.
In turn, specialization in 'Human Resources' allows the development of competences to:
- Use tools to support and drive processes of social and organizational innovation and human resources development in work organizations;
- Choose and implement human resources management techniques that allow people management in different organizational contexts.

Career Prospects
The possibility of experiencing an Internship in the 2nd year is an important mechanism to demonstrate skills, consolidate acquired knowledge and competences and to enhance students' employability.
Specific Entry Requirements
The Master in Sociology is directed to students holding a degree in Sociology or in Social Sciences and Humanities, granted by Portuguese or foreign universities. Preference is given to those holding a graduation (or legal equivalent) having a final grade equal or higher than 14 values (in 20).
