Precision Agriculture Technologie

Master Degree

Ano Letivo 2026/2027

Course Overview

According to current projections, food production needs to grow 60% by 2050 to feed the entire population of the planet. This pressing need is leading to major changes in agriculture and food production sector. The challenge are therefore to produce more with less considering that the resources are increasingly scarce and the environmental impacts have to be reduced. The philosophical principle of Precision Agriculture makes every day more sense: "Treating differently things that are different, using stable and calibrated technologies in order to increase agronomic, economic, environmental and social processes?.
Remote (satellites) and proximal (geoelectric) sensors; variable rate technologies (VRT); internet of things (IoT); "machine learning" and other artificial intelligence techniques are currently being used to optimize soil-water-plant relationships. The agronomic act is nowadays supported by two types of intelligence, human and artificial, being able to manage large amounts of information in almost near real time, reducing therefore risks on decisions.
In association, the Évora (ECT) and the Nova (FCT) Universities, based on their expertise at this field, offer to students at this master's degree, unforgettable experiences, as well as an unprecedented scientific and technical preparation on Precision Agriculture technologies and processes management.

Career Prospects

In a broader scope this master degree intends to form the future Precision Agriculture technology managers. In a narrower scope, will form the professional that will: i) develop geoelectric surveys in companies that study the soil spatial variability, as well as intelligent soil nutrient surveys; (ii) built nutrients and other inputs VRT maps such as fertilizers and seeds; iii) operate different types of GNSS in order to georeference plots, soil samples, plants and others; iv) operate different agricultural machinery and equipment, namely in VRT processes; v) able to handle and develop work with remote sensors, namely processing satellite images for agronomic monitoring; vi) able to handle and develop work with proximal sensors, namely in monitoring and managing yield and quality crop parameters; vii) processing large volumes of data, using appropriate programming languages; viii) install IoT sensors, as well as managing the acquisition of large volumes of data; ix) work with artificial intelligence techniques and handling large volumes of data; x) develop economic studies in the implementation of new technologies; (xi) develop applied research in the Precision Agriculture field.
