Presentation

Econometrics I aims at providing students the knowledge of the main statistical techniques used in the analysis of economic relations.

Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

Providing an overview of the main elementary statistical techniques employed in the analysis of economic relationships and in the evaluation of laws that underlie the economic behaviour.
Developing the ability of analysing and manipulating cross-sectional data.
Developing the ability of using econometric software and real datasets.
Developing the ability of formulation and interpretation of econometric models.
Developing critical reasoning and the ability of abstraction.

Contents

THE SIMPLE REGRESSION LINEAR MODEL WITH CROSS-SECTIONAL DATA: Specification; Estimation; Expected Values, Variances and Properties of the Estimators.

MULTIPLE REGRESSION ANALYSIS WITH CROSS SECTIONAL DATA: Specification; Estimation; Functional Form and Transformation of Variables; Effects of Changing the Unit of Measurement; Expected Values, Variances and Properties of the Estimators; Multicolinearity; Inference; Prediction.

OTHER TOPICS OF LINEAR REGRESSION: Specification Analysis; Qualitative Regressors; Topics on Assymptotic Theory.

HETEROSKEDASTICITY: Properties of the Estimators; Estimation in the Presence of Heteroskedasticity, Heteroskedasticity Tests.

Teaching Methods

Teaching is based on theoretical and practical classes, with a small number of students, where, after the transmission of theoretical contents, students solve practical exercises that help to understand the concepts and put the knowledge into practice. In exercise solving, priority is given to the use of real data supported by appropriate econometric software.
The course is based on a continuous assessment regime, which assumes attendance at least 75% of classes; two practical group assignments, with a weight of 15% of the final grade each, and two individual written tests, with a weight of 35% each. Students may also opt for the exam scheme where they will take a single assessment test at the end of the semester.
