Earth and Atmospheric Sciences

Master Degree

Ano Letivo 2025/2026

Course Overview

This Master course provides advanced knowledge in two areas of specialization (branches) related to the subsystems of Earth and Atmosphere, as well as the technologies and methodologies for observing, monitoring, and modeling these subsystems, with particular attention to various environmental aspects. The program aims to fill a gap in second-cycle offerings in this field available at Portuguese universities, by integrating knowledge and applications related to the Earth and Atmosphere.

The two areas of specialization offer some common disciplines, in order to provide the essential knowledge and competencies needed across various fields of Earth Sciences, with the specificity of each branch ensured by specialized courses.

The program is part of the research activities carried out at the Institute of Earth Sciences (ICT) as well as the Research Center in Science and Technology for the Earth System and Energy (CREATE), which strengthens the connection between the program and the latest scientific and technological innovations. Both units are involved in cutting-edge research in the areas of modeling and monitoring of natural and energy systems, promoting an interdisciplinary approach focused on sustainable solutions for the planet. They also offer excellent infrastructure that complements the program's training, including a network of meteorological stations in the region, an observatory dedicated to atmospheric environmental monitoring, precision instrumentation and optics laboratories for the development and calibration of environmental instruments, an environmental geochemistry laboratory equipped for the preparation and analysis of metals, nutrients, and other chemical elements in various geological matrices, as well as a wide range of geophysical instrumentation, including both permanent and temporary seismic networks. The program also includes a strong applied research component in technologies.
