Earth and Atmospheric Sciences

Master Degree

Ano Letivo 2025/2026

Course Overview

This Master course provides advanced knowledge in two areas of specialization (branches), on the Earth and Atmosphere subsystems and on the technologies and methodologies of observation, monitoring and modeling of these subsystems, with particular concern for various environmental aspects. The course intends to fill a gap in the 2nd cycle offers in this area, available in Portuguese Universities, articulating in an integrated way the knowledge and applications related to the Globe and Atmosphere. The two areas of specialization have some common disciplines in order to provide the common knowledge and skills required for the various areas of Earth Sciences, and the specificity of each branch is ensured by specialty disciplines. The course is part of the research activities developed at the Institute of Earth Sciences (ICT), an FCT rated R&D Unit with Very Good. ICT has unique infrastructures in the areas of specialization of the course: network of meteorological stations in the region, observatory dedicated to atmospheric environment monitoring, precision instrumentation and optics laboratories for development and calibration of environmental instrumentation, environmental geochemistry laboratory equipped for the preparation and analysis of metals, nutrients and other chemical elements in various geological matrices, varied geophysical instrumentation , including several seismological stations.
