Course Overview

The main objective of the PhD program in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences is to promote the conciliation between agricultural production and environmental quality, preserving functional processes and biodiversity. This 3rd Cycle is a scientific-pedagogical interface between agrarian sciences and environmental sciences, generating synergies that promote production processes more sustainable and territorially more balanced. The functional integration of both domains will be the main distinguishing feature of this PhD program, which is believed to be different in the national panorama of the 3rd Cycle offer. At the end of this course, students should be able to demonstrate: (1) the ability to systematically understand the two fundamental areas of the course - agricultural sciences and environmental sciences; (2) methodological knowledge associated with the two fundamental areas of the course and proficiency in the research methods necessary for the development of experimental work; 3) ability to autonomously conceive and carry out research according to high requirement parameters.

Specific Entry Requirements

Holders of a master's degree (or equivalent) in scientific areas in the field of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences - such as Agriculture and Forest Sciences, Agricultural Engineering, Environmental and Ecology Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Animal Science, Food Sciences, Biodiversity and Conservation or others, accepted by the Course Committee. In particular conditions, candidates with the graduation degree obtained before the implementation of the Bologna Process might be accepted, if the degree was obtained in the scientific areas of the study cycle and if the candidates have an academically and scientifically relevant curriculum (to be recognized by the Pedagogic and Scientific Council of the Institute of Advanced Studies and Research as having the competence and skills to undergo the study cycle). Fluency in Portuguese and/or English, spoken and written, is mandatory. In case of doubt, the jury may call the candidate for an interview. Failure to comply with this criterion leads to non-admission.
