Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

Expected learning outcomes:
- Acquire current knowledge about the pathophysiology, clinical, laboratory and imaging diagnosis of conditions of the various devices that have an indication for surgical resolution
- Learn about the most appropriate surgical techniques for the treatment of each condition and that acquire technical skills in the execution of interventions
- Predict the clinical evolution and establish prognosis about the various conditions of surgical resolution.
Competences developed:
- Ability to draw up lists of differential diagnoses in relation to the most common clinical conditions that affect soft tissue organ systems
- Use the available diagnostic tests and interpret the respective results in the diagnosis of conditions with surgical indication
- Decision-making ability in choosing the most appropriate surgical technique for each condition
- Establish protocols for pre and postoperative care to be observed in surgical therapy in different conditions.

Contents

• Pathologies with indication for surgical resolution of the skin and external and middle ear of small animals.

• Pathologies with indication for surgical resolution of the digestive system and digestive tract glands (pancreas, liver, bile ducts and spleen) of small animals.

• Hernias of the abdominal wall, diaphragm and perineum of small animals.
Main techniques of umbilical, inguinal, abdominal, diaphragmatic and perineal herniorrhaphy.

• Pathologies with indication for surgical resolution of the respiratory system (upper and lower airways, lung, pleura and pleural cavity) of small animals.

• Pathologies with indication for surgical resolution of the cardiovascular and lymphatic system of small animals.

• Pathologies with indication of surgical resolution of the urinary tract of small animals.

• Pathologies with indication for surgical resolution of the female and male genital tract of small animals.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical and TP teaching sessions. In the theoretical exposition of the themes of the program, the student will have the opportunity to know the affections of surgical indication in terms of clinical presentation, pathophysiology, diagnosis, therapeutic decision and exposure of surgical techniques, possible complications and postoperative care. In TP sessions, contact with surgical clinical cases, from the hospital cases, following the process of diagnosis and surgical therapy, encouraged to autonomously present the most appropriate surgical and anesthetic protocol for each case. Case studies - students developing clinical reasoning.
There are two assessment regimes: continuous assessment or final assessment. In the final grade gives a weight of 15% to the performance in the TP sessions, and 85% to the T component. In the final evaluation regime, the grade gives a weight of 15% to the student's performance in theoretical-practical sessions and 85% to the final exam.
