The Earth and Atmospheric Sciences course is a degree in the area of the Earth Sciences which contribute to
knowledge and understanding of the Earth as a dynamic system, giving to those who attend a set of general and
specific skills like:
- Identify the key processes that led to the formation and evolution of the Earth system and its evolution over time;
- Know and identify the natural processes that keep the Earth system in balance;- Evaluate and monitoring the
mineral and geological resources and environmental water, using new technologies to detect and monitoring
(satellites, radar, GPS, etc.);
- Know the effects of human activity on the Earth system, the inherent natural and technological hazards and how
to combat them; and
- Know the observational and numerical methods for analysis and forecasting.

The great course interdisciplinary and the modular structure with a wide range of options, privileging the "know-how" allows our graduates to acquire diverse skills that prepare them effectively to perform functions in:
- Industrial companies in the sectors of exploration and mining and water resources;
- Management of coastal regions and natural parks as well as civil protection;
- Municipalities in the sectors of planning, geotechnics and technical assistance in general;
- As technician in geotechnics, geophysics and/or environment areas;
- As meteorologist; or
- As a geologist;
On the other hand, the ability to integrate information from different sources, to work in groups and to make decisions makes the graduates in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences especially apt to integrate working groups in the area of management. This degree also provides a suitable scientific basis for the frequency of 2nd cycles, namely in Earth Sciences, Atmosphere and Space, Energy and Environment, or others in related fields.
