Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

Introduce and apply the fundamental methods and techniques that involve project work focuses on its different phases: arise of the initial idea, bibliographic research, planning, resource gathering, execution and results obtaining, dissemination.
Train the application of methods and techniques involved in physics and chemistry areas;
Promote contact the student with research projects and teams in Physics and Chemistry areas, running at the Physics and Chemistry Departments as in the Research Centers of the University of Évora.
Develop the liking for research in Physics and Chemistry.
Develop the capacity to identify, pose and solve problems.

Contents

Introduction to research methodologies in Physics and Chemistry, involving issues such as: a) The problem to be investigated, c) bibliographic research, c) training of methods and techniques to be used, c) data collection and treatment, d) interpretation of results, e) presentation of results and dissemination.
Development of small research projects on topics of Physics and Chemistry, which involve the application of the questions mentioned above. These projects will be supervised by professors/researchers specialized in the chosen scientific areas that encourage the student to apply diverse and new experimental and numerical means. At the end each project will be presented as a seminar in a workshop organized for this purpose. In projects that require the use of specific equipment not available in the teaching laboratories of the Departments of Physics and Chemistry, those existing from the various research laboratories of the University will be used.

Teaching Methods

Teaching is organized through theoretical-practical, project work and seminar classes. In the first classes, the teacher presents several topics to investigate, giving the possibility for students propose other themes. Each theme will be discussed and, at the end, distributed to students.
Each project will be supervised by a professor / researcher from the Physics Departments assigned for that purpose. To not break the connection between the various projects, once a month the meets in plenary and each group report on the evolution of their work and discuss formal questions with colleagues. At the end of the semester, the head of the curse organizes a Workshop, where students submit extended abstracts of the projects and present seminars.
The evaluation is made based on the student's participation throughout the semester (P), and in the works presented: extended abstracts (EA) and seminar (S). Final classification = 0.25 * P + 0.50 * EA + 0.25 * S
