Course Overview

The Earth's population increases by more than 225,000 people every day! The inevitable overload for the balance of the natural systems on which we depend, makes the understanding and management of these systems fundamental to the existence of a sustainable future. The urgency of this problem has led the European Community to consider, in its strategic development program (Horizonte 2020), climate change, resources and raw materials as key domains to the future of Europe, decreasing its dependence relative to other parts of the world. This concern led Portugal to elaborate the National Strategy for Geological Resources (DR176, 11/9/2012). Geology undoubtedly has a prominent place in the effort to achieve these commitments. The Course of Geology at University of Évora was structured in order to guarantee its graduates a solid training, based on field observation, characterization of geological materials, recognition of the main analytical methods, as well as the use of these domains to understand the evolutionary processes in the planet Earth. Central issues of this degree are also the exploitation of natural resources and intervention in interdisciplinary fields, such as environment, restoration of architectural heritage, or support to the civil construction industry. The interaction with several research centers, classified as Excellent, makes the graduates in Geology at University of Évora professionalo solidly prepared for the challenges of the future.

Career Prospects

Alentejo is the national region with the greatest potential in metallic and non-metallic mineral resources. In the mines of Castro Verde and Aljustrel are placed the main national extractive industries and the marbles of Estremoz region are a unique geological resource in Portugal and in the World. The close collaboration of the professors of the Department of Geosciences of the University of Évora with several companies of the region, allowing a teaching with sharp experimental and applied components, is an added value for our graduates, with a direct influence on the employability. Among the various possibilities for insertion in the labor market, the following should be highlighted: a) municipalities and civil protection services; b.) construction and geotechnical companies; c.) exploration companies of geological and energy resources; d.) companies and institutions dedicated to the environment and territorial planning; e.) companies and services of water exploration and prospection; f.) basic, secondary and higher education institutions; g.) companies specialized in geological or technical-scientific consultancy.
