The aim with this course is that students acquire skills that enable the understanding, analysis and
interpretation of information within the areas of Biotechnology, Biochemistry, and other biological
applications. For the amount of information available in these areas is indispensable to use statistical tools
for data processing, and it is vital to learn some software required for that purpose. This course provides
basic training for students in the areas of Biostatistics and the use of computer software for data analysis.
The analyses of statistical outputs intent to explore and to show application of statistical methodology in
real problems, emphasizing the interpretation and the correct analysis of the results.

Contents
One-dimensional and two-dimensional descriptive statistics.
Probability topics. Random variables. Distribution function.
Discrete and continuous probability distributions.
Sampling. Sampling distributions.
Point estimation and confidence intervals
Tests for the mean, variance, proportion, comparison of means (independent samples and paired samples),
comparison of variances and comparison of proportions. Analysis of variance. Nonparametric tests.
Use of programs on the MS Windows. MS Excel. SPSS statistical software.

Teaching Methods
Teaching methodologies: In theoretical classes it will be exposed the concepts and statistical
methodologies following the program. Several examples of applications in health and biological
applications will be shown.
In practical and laboratory classes students have the opportunity to solve several problems posed in each
topic taught, and will have computer equipment at their disposal that will provide the resolution of the
problems with the help of statistical software SPSS and Excel.
Evaluation:
