Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

To give basic hydraulic knowledge needed for the engineer in the domain of irrigation and drainage. Apply this knowledge to solve specific problems, preparing the student for planning, design and management of irrigation and drainage systems. It should be considered as a basic course for future Technology and Design of Irrigation and Drainage systems courses.

Contents

1. Fluids physical properties. 2. Hydrostatics: Hydrostatic pressure; Pressure measurement; Manometers; hydrostatic impulsion, calculation of impulsion over floodgates (plane and radial). 3. Hydrocinematics: Types of flow; Continuity equation; Applications. 4. Hydrodynamics: Bernoulli Theorem, application to real fluids; Hydraulic power. 5. Pressurized flows: Friction losses in irrigation pipes; Local friction losses; Calculation of installations and pipe trajectory. 6. Pumps: Pump selection; Problems in centrifugal pumps: cavitation; Pump stations. 7. Free surface flow: Types of flow; Application of the Bernoulli Th. to open channels flow; Uniform flow in channels; Gradually varied flow: backwater effect and hydraulic jump; Flow control in open channels; Irrigation and drainage channels design. 8. Holes and Weirs: Control and measurement of flow.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical-practical classes about the different themes of the discipline program and resolution of theoretical-practical problems in classes by students with teacher accompaniment.
The evaluation includes two practical theoretical tests agreed with the students, each one about half of the program of the discipline and having a weight of 50% in the final evaluation. Students to be discharged from the final exam must have at least 7 values (on a scale of 0 to 20) in each of the tests.
Final normal examination and the appeal examination exam will also be theoretical and practical and each of the examinations should go the students who have not had approval through the two tests and also those who, although with positive evaluation in both tests, want to improve their final classification.
