Learning Goals

Study of interpretive ideas, of the modes of record and knowledge of places and complex constructive appreciation especially defined as Archetypes of aesthetic perception and cultural intervention on long duration, leading to the understanding of notions of monumentality and monumental heritage in Heritage studies and correlative with thematic studies in art history, architectural and urban forms and your management.

Contents

1. Monumental models and its surveying: space, place and landscape; nature and cultural construction of identity.
2. Sacred and symbolic meanings and the archetypes: the appearance of ancient monumental typologies - city, temple, pilgrimage.
3. Historical models and the establishment of the monumental itineraries: the biblical Holy Land, the post-classical discourses on the Seven Wonders and the cultural and religious triumph of Christian Rome.
4. Monumental models and the establishment of built typologies as civilizational image stand-marks; the monuments as didactics.
5. Monumental models and itineraries: archaeological discoveries and aesthetical debates (16th-17th Centuries), the context of Grand Tour and rediscovery of the Orient (18th-19th Centuries).
6. Cosmopolitan models: urban renewal processes and revival trends.
7. Utopia and dystopia: from imaginary landscapes to the architectonical and urban reinvention in the Arts and literature; virtual and digital reconstitution.

Teaching Methods

Lecturing sessions on thematical issues, regarding, the direct approach towards significant examples. Progressive orientation of the student, with the aim to prepare his/her capacity to develop critical and theoretical knowledge.

Continuous evaluation: preparation of a written essay, containing a critical-descriptive report of two subjects in the curricular unit (with a record of the programmed activities) (20%) and contributing, in thematic terms, to a Paper (text with 5000 characters, no spaces included, bibliography and attachments not included) (65%), with oral presentation (15%).
Exam: Delivery of a written paper on the subject agreed with the teaching team (100%).
