Presentation

In this UC it is intended that the student prepares a bibliographic review (state of the art) of the thesis and that he prepares his detailed Thesis Plan (both documents should be in English).

Learning Goals

It is intended that the students prepare a bibliographic Review (monograph with the state of the art on the
subject of the thesis, in English ) and present a detailed Plan Thesis, in English. The aim is the integration
of skills, methodologies and knowledge acquired in the courses SB, PI and optionals in planning the
Thesis Plan, contributing to the development of a systematic understanding of the subject, ability to
conceive and design experiments in scientific research, critical analysis and communication with peers.
The specific objectives are to:
1) consolidate the knowledge in the area
2) consolidate the scientific method and experimental design
3) develop skills in the analysis of articles from bibliographic databases
4) develop the ability to elaborate a review
5) develop the ability to prepare a detailed Thesis Plan, including experimental methodologies
6) develop the ability to publically present the plan
7) develop the use of the English language (written and oral)

Contents

It comprises the preparation of both an exhaustive bibliographic Review on the subject of the thesis and a
detailed Thesis Plan, under the scientific supervision of the advisor and tutorial guidance of the faculty of
the UC.
The preparation of the bibliographic Review on the topic of the thesis is essential for the preparation of the
Thesis Plan, in particular for the identification of open issues and therefore the design of a high-quality
thesis plan, including general and specific objectives, tasks, methodologies, etc. Although it is a separate
Course, it is closely linked to the Thesis Project, being decisive for the success of the student in
concluding the PhD programme.

Teaching Methods

The teaching methodology consists of tutorials, more specifically, scientific guidance of the supervisor
and tutorial guidance of professors from UC, in processes of autonomous learning, aiming the preparation
of the bibliographic Review and preparation of thesis Plan.
The assessment consists of:
i) Bibliographic Review: monograph comprising the state of the art, essential for the planning of the thesis
plan, with a maximum of 5000 words (excluding references), in English;
ii) Oral Presentation of Thesis Plan: Powerpoint presentation with a maximum duration of 20 min. followed
by 10 minutes of discussion with members of the jury of the UC.
Each component i) and ii), has 50% weight in the final evaluation.
