Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

To know and to identify the major ampelographic, agronomical and oenological characteristics, of the main grapevine cultivars.
To understand the evolution of the grapevine plant material and to have a personal opinion about how the clone selection and the genetic breeding contributed for this evolution.
To know the most important characteristics of the main grapevine rootstocks and to understand its influence on grapevine management, and on quality and quantity of grape production.
Know the work of the grapevine plant nurseries and the grapevine propagation techniques
To have a better knowledge about the value of the cultivar choice on a grapevine project.

Contents

1- Origin, distribution, and botanical classification in Vitis spp.
2- Identification and ampelographic characterization of grapevine cultivars and rootstocks (ampelography and ampelometry). A new ampelographic perspective, the molecular characterization of cultivars and clones.
3- From the variety to the clone: The evolution of the plant material in grapevine; Clonal Selection, classic breeding, marker assisted selection and plant biotechnology support.
4-Grapevine rootstocks. Grafting compatibility with Vitis vinifera and major agronomic characteristics.
5 – Grapevine nurseries and vine propagation techniques
6- National and world-wide grape cultivars. Their agronomic and oenological aptitudes. Groups of grape cultivars from several winemaker regions; Tradition or innovation.

Teaching Methods

Teaching: Theoretical, and practical classes both, in classroom and in nurseries and vineyards.
Evaluation:
The continuous evaluation consists of 2 written frequency tests with a weight of 40% each and a field observations report with 20% value. Alternatively, a final exam can be chosen.
