Learning Goals

By completing this course (curricular unit), students should have acquired basic concepts in Cell Biology and Genetics, with particular emphasis on Human aspects, such as Human Genetics and modern Molecular Biology. This will imply understanding the basic concepts of the general structure and organization of the cell, as the unit of all living beings, including a description and structural organization of its individual components.
To understand the significance and basic function of the two cell division mechanisms (mitosis and meiosis) and the biological significance in the human life cycle.
To understand the basic principles of Genetics, in particular Human Genetics, from a mendelian and non-mendelian perspective, as well as the modern Molecular Genetics and its applications in Human Genetics and Behaviour.


1. Lectures
1.1. The cell: introduction to the study of cell biology.
1.2. Identification, characterization and function of the different cell organelles
1.3. Cell division: mitosis and meiosis.
1.4. Genetics: introduction and historical outline. Mendel; genotype and phenotype. Hybridism.
1.5. Incomplete dominance; factorial interaction; mutations; linkage; hereditary and sex.
1.6. Molecular genetics; the genetic code and the human genome.
1.7. Human Genetics; human chromosomes. Genetic diseases. The genetic basis of behaviour.
1.8. Genetics and Bioethics.

2. Lab and practical
a. Basic principles of microscopy and use of the microscope
b. Elementary observations of the main cell components
c. Observation of the most representative human cells and tissues
d. Observation of human chromosomes and karyotypes
e. Hereditary and non-hereditary characteristics: identification
f. Exercises with family trees and quantitative genetics.

Teaching Methods

Several complementary teaching methodologies in accordance with the contents of the teaching materials in class, namely traditional lecturing as well as interactive, including the invitation to explore further readings online. The theoretical-practical classes include microscopy labs, deployed in alternation with sessions Moodle lessons for revision of the concepts.

Evaluation methods:
Continuous Assessment: two supervised examinations covering the contents of the theoretical and theoretical-practical classes, 30% of the final mark each; two practical examinations (illustration of observations under a microscope), 10% each; two group work assignments with presentations in the theoretical classes, 10% each. There is no minimum mark for any of the tests individually.
Final Assessment: one final exam.
