The objectives defined for the Basic Notions of Chemistry course are naturally related to its elementary, generalist and supporting role for subsequent courses.
Students should develop skills that allow them to:
-Know and understand the fundamental concepts and principles of Chemistry.
-Know and understand the importance of Chemistry in Society and the central role it plays in the explanation and interpretation of phenomena in multiple scientific and technological areas.
- Identify problems in the Chemistry area.
- Interpret specialized information in the Chemistry area.
- Apply chemistry knowledge to solve concrete problems in the scientific area of Chemistry.
- Cooperate in group work and participate in collaborative learning activities.


Constitution of matter. Atomic structure. Periodic Table of the Elements. Periodic properties. Nomenclature of inorganic compounds. Chemical bond. Solutions and their properties. Chemical reactions. Stoichiometry. Energy and chemical transformations. Spontaneity of transformations. Entropy. Chemical equilibrium systems. Properties. Homogeneous chemical balance. Heterogeneous chemical equilibrium. Solubility of salts. Solubility balance. Ionic equilibria in homogeneous systems. Acids, bases, and salts. Acid-base equilibrium. Buffer solutions. Acid-base titrations. Oxidation-reduction reactions. Electrochemistry.
In practical laboratory classes, students carry out practical works that illustrate some of the topics covered in theoretical classes, namely: Colligative properties, Calorimetry, Study of systems in chemical equilibrium; Acid-base volumetry; Oxidation-reduction reactions and Electrochemical cells.

Teaching Methods

The syllabus is taught interactively, using different methodologies, supported by the provision of study material, by consulting the recommended bibliography and by the student's autonomous work.
The theoretical classes are classes of exposition of the subject, illustrated by examples that concretize the concepts and that will be explored and discussed in the classes.
The theoretical-practical classes are designed to solve problems that give practical examples of the syllabus.
The practical laboratory classes are designed to carry out works related to the syllabus and which aim to develop practical skills in the student.
The theoretical and theoretical-practical components are evaluated individually in two optional modes: continuous assessment (two tests) or the final exam. The final grade will be calculated as follows: 20% for the practical laboratory component and 80% of the grade obtained in the theoretical and theoretical-practical components.
