Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

The aim of this Curricular Unity is to provide the students with general concepts of Biochemistry as well as the experimental support to understand molecular aspects of life. Students will be able to describe the structures and functions of macromolecules, identify and execute the main methodologies and techniques for the quantification and separation of biomolecules and understanding their significance for living organisms and healt.
This Curricular Unit should develop instrumental, interpersonal and systemic competences, including competences for research, selected and interpreting scientific contents in Biochemistry in order to identify and interpreting the main syllabus, which allow the students to speak and write on coherent and logical way about these ideas and scientific knowledge in the field of Biochemistry.

Contents

Biochemistry: An Introduction. Methodology and technical approaches used in Biochemistry.
Water and biological systems. Functional characteristics of biomolecules. Carbohydrates: Mono and Polysaccharides. Amino acids, peptides and proteins. Nucleotides and nucleic acids. Lipids and lipoproteins. Structure and properties of biomembranes. Enzymes and enzymatic kinetic. Introduction to bioenergetics and bioelectrochemistry. The role of ATP in metabolic processes. Introduction to the metabolism and to major metabolic pathways.

Teaching Methods

The teaching-learning process will be based in the individual work of students, supported by recommended bibliography. The lectures will be plenary and supported by audiovisual techniques. The practical classes will be articulated with theoretical classes, performing laboratory work and problem solving applied to the theoretical contents.
The evaluation system is based on the classification obtained in the laboratorial and theoretical components. The laboratorial component, only by continuous assessment, will take into account student attendance, the timely preparation of the laboratorial notebook/reports and the grade obtained in the practical tests. The theoretical component will be evaluated in two optional modalities: two frequencies or one exam. The final grade will be calculated based on the grade obtained in the laboratorial component (30%) and the grade obtained by frequency / exam (70%).
