Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

The goal of this UC is to provide the students with education in the design and scaling of facilities for the treatment of drinking water, municipal and industrial wastewaters, focusing on the industries with most significant expression in Portugal. In the UC the students should obtain knowledge and skills for (i) characterizing the drinking water, enumerating the main processes of treatment and stages in a water treatment plant; (ii) identifying the main types of pollutants present in wastewaters, the sources of pollution and the environmental impacts, (iii) characterizing the different types of wastewaters and wastewater sludges (ETAR); (iv) being aware of the laws and regulations currently applicable to the domain of wastewaters and ETAR, (v) enumerating the processes of wastewater treatment; (vi) outlining treatment schemes according to the characteristics of raw wastewaters and destination of the treated wastewater, including the design of the treatment plant.

Teaching Methods

The teaching/learning is based in the individual work of students, supported by recommended bibliography and notes taken by the students either during classes or through individual research. The lectures are not purely expository, as they are illustrated with the resolution of problems of practical examples which embody the themes developed. Laboratory classes are also conducted in order to develop a practical knowledge in the identification and quantification of the major constituents of a wastewater. Case studies, about practical and real situations will also be analysed in class. The evaluation focuses the level of acquired knowledge and the development of new skills. The evaluation is carried out with the realization of a written exam (or alternatively two test: mid-term and end of semester) (60%) which is complemented with the classification of lab reports corresponding the work performed in lab classes, as well as the evaluation of the performance during the lab classes (40%).
