Learning Goals

Acquire essential operative knowledge capture, editing, production and sound post-production. To
investigate and analyse types of artistic production, which are between the visual arts and music.
Knowing the features and characteristics of the different digital sound formats and know how to use them
properly depending on the intended purposes.
Learn to deal with various analog and digital sound devices and their different possibilities of connectivity and
communication.
Know how to use the possibilities of sound in artistic expressions of different types (video, installation,
performance).

Contents

History of phonography: the gramophone to digital formats. Technical, artistic and cultural implications.
Historical relations between the use of sound and artistic production: from Russolo to the digital age.
Relations between contemporary music and avant-garde art. Further analysis of two authors: John Cage and
Alvin Lucier.
Sound use of analysis in different contexts: the performing arts to audiovisual.
Synesthesia: metaphorical relationships between sound and image in the twentieth century.
Technique:
Understanding sound pickup.
Editing audio and MIDI in specialized software.
Using MIDI interfaces, configuration and hardware connectivity and software: different possibilities of set up
studio and live act.
Post-production tools.
Practice:
Development of technical exercises of short audio and MIDI editing.
Further development of a sound design exercise.
Support and encourage the artistic projects of the students within the public address

Teaching Methods

Historical and theoretical framing sessions: listening and commenting on selected material.
Technical and operative approach sessions of the tools used (software and hardware).
Accompaniment in the development of proposed works.

EVALUATION

In the NORMAL SEASON assessment students may choose one of two schemes: Continuous or Final Assessment.

1. CONTINUOUS EVALUATION SCHEME

Evaluation Components:

a. Class participation: 20%;
b. Work developed during the period with the accompaniment of the teacher, which must be submitted, at least, to a periodic evaluation with public disclosure of the classifications: 40%;
c. Presentation and defense of the work developed during the classes, which occurs during the "Regular Season Evaluations": 40%.

2. FINAL EVALUATION SCHEME

a. Work developed during the period with the teacher's accompaniment: 40%;
b. Examination based on the contents taught: 60%.
