Learning Goals

1) Knowledge of the state of the art in a philosophical area to which belong PhD projects.
2) Analysis of particular issues in a relevant area of philosophical knowledge at present
3) Integration of students in the research lines of the course teachers
4) Developing students the ability to contextualize the problem investigating the horizon of
contemporary philosophical debates
5) To foster in students the practice of a methodologically consistent approach to themes of their
nascent projects
6) Practice of academic work, formally correct, conceptually precise and well structured.

Contents

Philosophy and Portuguese Thought

Module 1:
The issue of situated philosophies:
From O Problema da Filosofia Portuguesa (Alvaro Ribeiro, 1943) to the controversy (1955-58). The
reformulation of the problem in terms of culture and as a horizon of research.

Module 2:
The thought of José Marinho:
The ethical-metaphysical of youth: Aforismos sobre O Que Mais Importa (1932) and “Ensaios de
Aprofundamento”.
The design of Teoria do Ser e da Verdade (1943-61). The reappointment of the spirit and the thinker's
responsibilities.
Thinking anomic, “Da Assunção do Nada para a Liberdade Divina” (1960-1975).

Module 3:
The thought of Eduardo Lourenço:
Heterodoxias (1949) and the Portuguese situation.
O Labirinto da Saudade (1974) and Nós e a Europa (1988): the "mythical psychoanalysis of the
Portuguese destiny."
The literature as a way of thinking: O Tempo e a Poesia (1974). ). O caso Pessoa case: Fernando Rei da
Nossa Baviera (1986).
The “esplendor do caos”, European mythologies: L'Europe désenchantée (1994) and Portugal:
Mythologie de la saudade (2000).

Teaching Methods

The seminar operates in attendance and may draw up, in special cases, participation by Skype. The
lecionação include exposure, working texts and debate. Eventually, they can be merged with sessions
conducted by guest lecturers or student participation in scientific meetings, which take place on topics /
related fields

The evaluation will be based on:
1) attendance and active participation (10%);
2) an oral presentation or
writing a short essay or commentary on the theme treated in the seminar or a report, 2-3 p. (15%);
3) the formal presentation of a final written test on communication format in a colloquium (75%).
