Learning Goals

To provide advanced knowledge on consumer theory, producer theory and on some market failures, and to develop the ability to critically analyze real life microeconomic problems.
It is also an objective to promote the understanding of scientific texts in this area, the identification of possible gaps in knowledge that may justify further research, and the ability to perform research tasks (bibliographic reviews, modeling, empirical analysis).

Contents

1. Individual consumption and production choices
2. Equilibrium in competitive markets
3. Market failures: externalities and public goods; information asymmetries; market power
4. Game theory

Teaching Methods

The lectures are of a theoretical and practical nature. They are first occupied with the exposition of subjects related to each of the syllabus’ topics, followed by practical exercises, and discussions of how the topics relate to real life situations or have been object of further scientific developments.
The evaluation system comprises two options: continuous evaluation or final examination.
- Continuous evaluation: Final mark = maximum of I or II:
I = 0.4 * average grade of 3 out of 4 home assignments + 0.5 * written test + 0.1 * participation in discussions
II = written test
(in both cases the grade of the written test has to be at least 7 out of 20).

- Assessment by final examination: Final mark = maximum of I or II:
I = 0,9 * written examination + 0,1 * participation in discussions
II = Written examination
