Presentation

Random variables are introduced, the notions of discrete and continuous random variables, and some of the most important distribution laws and theoretical results.

Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

This discipline gives further abilities in statistics and probability, allowing the students to apply correctly the statistical techniques, to interpret critically the obtained results and to understand the inter-disciplinarity aspects regarding the different disciplines in the graduation. It is intended as a complement of the discipline Elements on Statistics and Probability I

Competences: Basic knowledge on random variables and distributions. Different probabilistic models. Notions of statistical inference. Correct use of statistic software.

Contents

1. Basic notions of random variables discrete and continuous. Basic notions of distributions. Moments. 2. Discrete and continuous models: Bernouli, binomial, hypergeometric, Poisson distributions. Uniform and normal distributions. 3. Law of large numbers, central limit theorem. 4. Sample distributions 5. Some topics of statistical inference.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical na practical classes. Whenever necessary using slides projection and software. Use of examples arising from different applied areas.

Two mid term tests. Final exam.
