Learning Goals
The UC of Portuguese Culture aims to give a multidisciplinary view of literary, historical and artistic culture.Thus, the whole study appears around areas such as Literature, Heritage, Architecture, Fine Arts, Photography, Cinema, Theater, Dance, Music, Food, Fashion & Design.The corpus will be essentially literary analysis, however there was occasionally the use of press articles specializing in cultural issues.The student will be able to acquire a strong sense of culture; perspective the main topics of Portuguese culture, interpreting them in a personal and creative form.
Contents
The Faces of Culture and National Identity
1. The notion of culture, etymology, history, anthropology, nature and religion. Culture and Civilization.
2. Natural conditions of the Portuguese culture: geographical situation of the Portuguese territory; specificity of the western Atlantic Iberian, Iberian context and continuity (climate, hydrology, and topography). The question of frontiers and cultural boundaries.
3. The power of history: a contribution to national culture.
4. The symbolic nature of cultural representations: universalism of the Portuguese culture: language, diversity factor and against.
5. That Portuguese culture? Examples of the Lusitanian identity: literature, cinema, music, art, science, food.

Teaching Methods
Theoretical and practical classes including lectures and using media contents that are uploaded in the beginning of every in the moodle. The students may choose between continuous assessment or exam. The continuous assessment consists of a written test and the production of a work or a portfolio to be developed throughout the term.
