Learning Goals

To frame the studies developed within Language Acquisition and to characterize those studies as to the specific case of European Portuguese, from different linguistic levels; it should take into account the Portuguese teaching system.
By the end of the year students should be able to:
- account for the way language acquisition studies and investigations developed since the 1950?s;
- to characterize the main stages of the Portuguese language acquisition and development;
- to analyze real data from different development stages (from birth to adolescence), identifying the standard characteristics of every stage;
- to characterize the impact of attending the school system (kindergarten and 1st cycle) on the development process.

1. Communication and language: the particularities of the human language

2. Pre-verbal communication
a. Characterization of the communicative changes during this period

3. Verbal communication
a. Comprehension and prodution on the mother tongue
b. Fonological development
c. Lexical and semantical development
d. Morfological and syntactical development
e. Pragmatical development
f. The written language

Teaching Methods

Colective teaching sessions: theoretical exposition and active discussion of the contents of the syllabus; discussion of brief oral presentations, in group or alone.
Tutorials: guidance of papers; doubts; correction of exercises and papers.
The student can choose between two evaluation methods: continuous evaluation or exam.
The continuous evaluation will include the participation of students during classes, presenting practical papers, organizing a portfolio and an exam. Thus, the evaluation will have the following items:
a) Attendance to class, global behavior during classes (10%)
b) Portfolio reflecting the activities developed during the semester (15%)
c) Presenting a practical session - related to the acquisition and development of a language item (25%)
d) An exam (50%)
