Learning Goals

Convey to students the basic and specific details of the distribution and plant ecology and species occurring in Portugal mainland. Ability to recognize different kinds of flora and Portuguese Botanical families. Ability to identify key factors contributing to the distribution of plants in a given territory.

Contents

Integrating Concepts in Ecology. Environmental factors that influence the distribution and adaptation of plants (climatic, physiographic, geologic, edaphic, biotic, and others). Distribution area Concept, origin center, natural areas modification and Iberian peninsula Biogeography (province, subprovince, Sectors and Subsectors). Botanical families main dDistribution , genera and indigenous species. Portuguese endemic flora of onthe global context: chorological and major threats to its conservation. Plant communities. Vegetable bases for coexistence. Flora and vegetation Concept . phytosociological sintaxonomy notions.

Teaching Methods

Oral presentation supported by visual aids, field trips, practical work and a study visit.
System of continuous assessment: attendance, practical work written, format (article), oral presentation and discussion of practical work (oral communication). Scheme of Examination: exam.
