Learning Goals

The contribution of local authorities in the national sports system is a factor of high importance
for regional development and quality of life of the Portuguese, as well as the democratization of
sport in Portugal.
Goals:
a) Provide the basic knowledge about the frame of reference of the sport in the counties and
legal responsibilities of the municipalities in the field of sport;
b) Addressing the major models of intervention and municipal management of sport;
c) Know some success stories, national and international work of local authorities in the sport
area.
Skills:
a) Understand the general framework for action by the municipalities in sport;
b) Mastering tools to develop programs in multiple areas of intervention of municipalities, from
sports training to the promotion of health through exercise;
c) To analyze the current situation and future development on the regional sports, nationally
and internationally.

Teaching Methods

The unit is organized in lectures, tutorials and practical classes in accordance with regulations
of the University of Évora. Lectures are plenary and based on the scientific method,
emphasizing the transmission of information, the interpretation of experimental results and the
stimulation of critical and scientific rigor in students, and practices by performing tasks for the
application of theoretical content. There are set out 30 hours of theoretical classes and 15
hours of practical classes, divided by 15 weeks (3 hours per week). Besides the oral
presentation it is intended through questioning, to control the acquisition of knowledge by
students.
The assessment includes written evaluation through a test frequency or exam and individual
work. All students must be at least 9,5 in each of the evaluation components, otherwise they
cannot successfully complete the UC.
