Presentation

This course aims to equip students with the basic skills to read documentation from the fourteenth to eighteenth centuries, as well as the ability to identify the production centres and the main documentary types produced.

Objectives:
To analyze, in general, the Palaeography and Diplomatic genesis and evolution over the period considered; to analyze the writing(s) mutations(s) in Portugal and its main features over the 13th-18th centuries; to describe and to differentiate the documental typologies and the internal and external elements of the documents; to direct a practical work of reading, interpretation and contextualization, enhancing the autonomy of the students and group labor.
Competences:
To read, to transcribe (in accordance with the standards paleographic norms) and to classify Portuguese Medieval and Early Modern documents; to identify documentary categories and to distinguish the intrinsic and extrinsic characters of diplomatic documents; to learn the outlines of the evolution of writing and its agents; to integrate and to analyze the documents in their contexts of production; to learn and to apply the knowledge in Palaeography and Diplomatic both in Archival Science and in History.

1. Palaeography and Diplomatic: the concepts
2. The writing and its evolution
3. Agents and production centers
4. Documents: the diplomatic level; types and formulas; the validation process
5. Paleographic transcription: rules and problems
6. Abbreviations: logical and illogical; development of the most common ones; abbreviations that should be kept. Dictionaries of abbreviations as working tools.
7. The edition of texts.

Teaching Methods

Classes will be essentially practical, focusing on practical exercises in reading and writing, with prior theoretical contents.
Evaluation: final exam or continuous assessment; the latter will contemplate two written works.
