Learning Goals

Acquisition of a contextualized understanding of the great currents of the History of Music in Portugal during this period. Development in the ability to question, structure and summarize knowledge. Development of the ability to expose orally and in writing.

Contents

- Historiography and periodization of the History of Music in Portugal.
- Catalogues and medieval liturgic repertoires.
- The galician-portuguese lyric and the monophonic profane repertoire.
- From the late XIV and XV century polyphonic songs to the religious XVII century vilancico.
- Keyboard music and instrumental repertoires from the "Arte de Gonçalo de Baena (1540)" to the "Livro de obras de órgão do Mosteiro do Bouro (sécs. XVII-XVIII)".
- Sacred polyphony from late XV to early XVIII centuries.

Teaching Methods

Expositional rendering of the main content, study cases, discussion of the proposed issues, and students' work supervision. A written test is produced at the end of the semester.
Evaluation Regime
1. Continuous Evaluation
Reading and study of several texts and multimedia examples sent, through Moodle, along the semester and participation in classes about the related commentaries and analysis (A-30%)
- 1 oral presentation about a theme in the Programme with a maximum of 30m. (A-30%)
- 1written final test with 2 hours maximum (PE - 40%)
2. Evaluation by final exam
- 1 essay of original synthesis with about 2500 words previously arranged with the teacher (E - 20%).
