Learning Goals

This CU aims at providing a framework for the main synchronic structures of contemporary Spanish. Thus, founded on the acquired competences, this CU offers students a space to deepen their knowledge and to be introduced to the descriptive Spanish linguistics. The CU has as specific objectives: 1.To deepen the explicit knowledge of Spanish; 2.To increase the acquired linguistic competences in the Spanish Language; 3. To consolidate the dominion of the structures and of the functions of the language in its several levels of analysis; 4.To characterize the differences between Spanish and Portuguese; 5.To practice Spanish in a grounded and competent way. By the end of the semester, students should be able:1. To acknowledge and characterize the Spanish linguistic space; 2.To acknowledge/characterize the varieties of Spanish;3. To do the phonetic transcription of Spanish; 4. To describe the core structures of the contemporary Spanish language in contrast with the Portuguese equivalents.

Contents

1. Main problems for Portuguese speakers in learning Spanish: a. Morphosyntactic, b. Grammatical and Orthographic, c. Phonetic- Phonological, d. Lexical: euphemisms and swear words. 2. Spelling and accentuation. Special cases. 3. Semantics: a. Homonyms and polysemy. Heterotonics, b. Denotation and connotation, c. Metaphor and metonymy, d. Euphemisms and dysphemisms. 4. Morphosyntax. a. Word formation. Word formation. Nominal inflection and verbal inflection, b. Word classes, c. Types of SE and QUE. Uses. d. Verbal periphrasis. e. Morphological and syntactic analysis: simple and compound sentence. 5. Aspects of Spanish phraseology and paremiology. a. Refranes and set phrases b. Catch-all words and muletillas c. Colloquial expressions and youthful language. Slang.

Teaching Methods

The syllabus and in exercises, with the supervision of the teacher, or the presentation, by the students (individually or in group), of the results of certain tasks of research and autonomous study of certain topics of the syllabus. The advanced study of some subjects will be done by means of bibliographical reviews, reading assignments, consultation of grammars, dictionaries and consultation of specific web sites. Tutorials will provide methodological and bibliographical references to help with individual essays and the execution of some tasks and exercises. Promoting the students' autonomy, tutorials also provide the students with personalized guidance taking into consideration their specific needs and competences.
Assessment: students may choose to:
1. Follow Continuous assessment: classroom work and homework (40%), a written test (40%) and an oral test (20%).
2. Do Final exam: Written test (80%) and oral test (20%).
