Learning Goals

Under the aegis of trip and love, the objectives of this course are intended to follow the development of this structuring theme in representative works of literary narrative nineteenth-century Portuguese,
developing in students their literary and cultural skills, enabling the students to:
1. Diachronically know the periodiological and generational configuration of Portuguese literature of the nineteenth century, in conjunction with the development of the historical and cultural context;
2. Understand the major aesthetic and ideological, thematic and formal trends, characterizing the various streams and their literary productions, in this period;
3. Critically address some of the major literary productions of the period covered by the nineteenth century, especially in the romantic period;
4. Recognizing the importance held by these timeless themes, conveyed in modern literary production, while axes determining the literary evolution.

Contents

. Panoramic review and criticism of literary of the period of the nineteenth century.
2. Romanticism in Portugal: periodological evolution
2.1 Garrett: the invention of modern prose;
2.2 Camilo Castelo Branco: trip and metanarrative.
3. From Romanticism to Naturalism: history, programmatic designs, aesthetic.
3.1 "Geração de 70": controversies, disagreements, evolutions; realism as romanticism;
3.2 Eça de Queirós: overcoming the realism / naturalism.

Teaching Methods

1. Theoretical-practical sessions, with the predominance in the following teaching strategies and assessment (continuous and formative, by direct observation):
- oral presentation of theoretical, methodological contents; discussion;
- observation, analysis and commentary on proposed texts and works;
- exploratory, dialogic reading of texts for application of concepts previously exposed.
2. Autonomous work: writing an academic essay where students explore, from corpus they elect, the productivity of themes and concepts developed in the classroom sessions. Their oral discussion will be object of a formative assessment and its written materialization will part of the final assessment (50% of the final mark in continuous assessment).
3. A written test on the curricular works and concepts, will represent the remaining percentage of the grade in continuous assessment (50%).
4. It is also possible for students to choose the system of exam (100% of final grade) or the appeal exam (id.).
