Presentation

This course aims to analyze the role of agriculture in the context of the national economy and in the rural development process.

Learning Goals

The main objectives of this unit are: to analyse the roll of agricultural sector in the context of the whole economy and in the development process; to identify the main problems of farmers (endogenous and exogenous); to describe the different kinds of policies that have been used; to characterize the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), its aims, evolution and the most important reforms; to manage in order the students can understand the complexities, potentialities and limitations of development programmes.
Transferable Skills:
Development of capacities to identify and to analyse rural and agricultural problems. Also, this course gives solid background to understand how agricultural system works and interacts with the other parts of the economy.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical explanation of concepts, discussion of subjects that can help to consolidate the theoretical concepts followed by the solution of real problems.
The assessment of this course comprises one of the following:
1) Continuous Assessment
To opt for this scheme of evaluation, the students must attend at least 80% of classes. Students with Student Worker status have no limit of absences.
This alternative assessment consists of performing two frequencies with weight of 50% each.
If the final grade is equal to or greater than 9.5 but have one score less than 7 points, the student must submit to an oral supplement.
2) Evaluation by Final Exam.
Students who do not participate in at least 50% of the collective sessions are automatically excluded from the evaluation process (including the special exam), except for students with Student Worker status.
In this scheme students perform a final written exam.

Assessment

Continuous Assessment Regime: A written test weighing 45%; one practical work, carried out in groups, with a weight of 40% and two reports with a weight of 15% in the final grade of the curricular unit.
Students who, simultaneously, have obtained:
Weighted average equal to or greater than 10 values ​​across all required assessment elements;
Grade equal to or greater than 7 in each of the assessment elements carried out.
A weighted final average equal to or greater than 10 points, in all the required assessment elements, together with a classification lower than 7 points in one of the assessment tests, implies taking an oral test.
Missing one of the continuous assessment tests presupposes that students opt for the exam assessment system.
Attendance at a minimum of 75% of teaching sessions of a collective nature (except in the case of student workers).
In Exam Regime: A written test (Exam) with a weight of 100%.
