Learning Goals

The main objective of this course is to familiarize students with the economic analysis of state activities, both at a theoretical level and in terms of knowledge of their main institutional and fiscal aspects (in Portugal). Thus, it is intended to provide students with intermediate level knowledge of Economics and Public Finance, developing the ability to apply the conceptual and analytical framework to concrete problems.

Within the scope of professional competences, the course intends to provide the ability to analyze public economic activity, in particular as regards the Portuguese case. In terms of general skills, the course provides autonomy and teamwork skills. In terms of specific skills, the course contributes, through contact with the public sector economic analysis, to the necessary background training in Economics, as well as to the ability to critically analyze the content and effects of fiscal policies.

Teaching Methods

The topics of the course are presented in theoretical/practical classes where the theoretical background is illustrated by examples and exercises.

A. Continuous assessment scheme
In this scheme it is necessary:
• Attend at least 75% of classes;
• Perform two individual assessment tests, with a minimum grade of 7 values each. The final grade results from the simple average of the results obtained in both tests.

B. Examination scheme
In this scheme it is necessary:
• Attend at least 75% of classes;
• Conduct an individual exam, the grade of which corresponds to the final grade.
