- To analyse historiographic problems in the long term, around three major themes, which may vary from year to year;
- To identify lines of continuity and discontinuity;
- To develop the comparative and interrelational approach in certain space-time cuts;
- To identify the use of different analysis scales;
- To awareness the importance of transdisciplinary theoretical frameworks;
- To know the state of the art and the main problems to be studied in Portugal and on the international scene;
- To know the archives and to criticize the available sources;
- To discuss the adequacy of methodologies;
- To develop academic writing;
- To develop creativity and transversal skills enabling innovation.

Contents
Presentation of the state of the art and how to identify central research questions on different themes. The topic's selection and the chronological framework depend on the students' interests. Examples of these topics are:
1 - Territory and urbanization
2 - Material culture and everyday life
3 - Social inequalities
4 - Social control strategies
5 Religion and religiousness
6 - Cultural consumption and literacy
7 - Local powers and institutions

Teaching Methods
- Each year the teaching team selects the topics to be addressed according to the students' interests and the research projects conducted in the research centers involved and in the Department;
- In each topic is explored, for different chronologies, the state of the art, the available sources, the dominant methodologies and the problems to be studied in the near future;
- Face-to-face classes correspond to seminars in which each topic opens with a brief presentation by the teacher and then relevant texts on the subject are discussed
- The assessment is based on 2 elements:
1) 40% - oral presentations by the students and their participation in the debates;
2) 60% - a written essay, based on bibliography and about a topic selected by the student according to his research interests. The essay will be assessed by all teachers.
