Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

The students should acquire:
1) fundamental knowledge about the Conservation Biology of terrestrial macroinvertebrates, giving
particular attention to their role in the functioning of the ecosystem, as well as to the species of
Portuguese fauna;
2) core competencies for the scientific study of animals, including observation, experiment and monitoring,
as well as to outline a work plan towards the scientific study of a population of macroinvertebrates or a
community that includes
such animals.
It is also intended that students:
1) analyse and discuss scientific articles;
2) develop the use of English in the scientific study of terrestrial macroinvertebrates,
3) communicate the results of their work by producing reports, written or oral, such as articles, scientific
posters or talks,
4) use the learning platform online (Moodle)

Contents

The evolutionary success of terrestrial macroinvertebrates and its overall biodiversity, past and present
conservation of terrestrial macroinvertebrates; the emergence of conservation biology of
macroinverbrates; levels of analysis: scale, fragmentation and destruction of habitats, species and their
conservation, biological pest control and conservation, the ethical value of macroinvertebrates; action
plans: habitats and their evaluation.

Teaching Methods

The teaching tasks include:
1) plenary lectures, also involving experts,
2) laboratory classes, which apply in different experimental procedures towards the better understanding
of theoretical matters; which are also used for laboratory analysis of samples collected during field work,
3) field work, including the campaigns of observation and sampling of macroinvertebratesl,
4) seminars, in which groups of students analyze and discuss scientific articles,
5) tutorial guidance, under which teachers will maintain regular contact with students, including in
electronic form, and is ready to answer questions and provide advice on scientific issues and operation of
the course.
Written exam and / or preparation of a report (80%), seminar and analysis discussion of scientific papers
(20%).
