Learning Goals

Objectives:
- to provide students with the opportunity to master the major theoretical concepts within the field of the sociology work;
- to become familiar with advanced sociological research in the area of work, employment and professions;
- understand the sociological approaches to the professions;
- understand what is a profession and to identify the key traces that distinguish them from other occupations;
- understand the place of the professions and professional associations in the labor market and its relations with the State;
- sociologically understand the place of "expertise" in the professional societies of the Western world;
The competences to acquire in this course are: 

- understand the sociological theories and methods to study the of the relationship between work and the global economy, the division of labor, the structure of work, power and control in the workplace; 

- develop the capacity to critically analyze the role of organizations and work in portuguese society and its integration into Europe; 

- develop original ideas for advanced research about organizations and work, employment and professions.

Contents

Module 1 - conceptual issues in approach the Work, employment and professions.
1.1. Paradigms sociological analysis of the work, employment and professions.
1.2. Trends in organizational analysis and labor
Module 2 - Work and social dynamics
2.1. Actors and collective relations in the workplace
2.2. Culture and identity in work organizations
2.3. Work dynamics and services: gender and life cycles
Module 3 - Diagnosis and analysis of working conditions
3.1. Organizational context and work in the contemporary era
3.2. Training, employment, unemployment and the labor market
3.3. Case studies about working conditions.
Module 4 .- Concept of Sociology of the Professions
4.1. A critical look at the idea of profession and as a social phenomenon of modernity
4.2. Main paradigms and analytical trends in the professions
Module 5 Professions and Society
5.1. Professions and the Labor Market
5.2. State and regulation of professional groups.

Teaching Methods

Unit to be taught by theoretical-practical sessions, classroom-based, and can eventually be applied practical exercises sessions via platform-moodle UEvora.
Tutorial sessions and self-study in accordance with Bologna Process recommendations.
For contact hours with the teacher and the teaching / learning will be organized in classes ~ essentially theoretical and practical.
In addition to the content teaching exhibition by the teacher, classes also count with students participation, individually or in small groups, and based on previously distributed resources or gathered through self-study.
a) Continuous Evaluation:
- summary of the assigned readings (1) (critical issues)
- Working paper (1) (a standard journal article based on existing data or readings materials)
b) Evaluation by final exam:
- Written test (a comprehensive final exam) and oral + practical work individually (standard journal article).
