Presentation

This course will endow students of the Master's with skills in the area of livestock facilities planning and its technological operation and sustainability

Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

The objectives are to give the student a solid preparation in matters related to planning and design animal housings, taking into account legislation and the aspects related to production systems. The students will acquire knowledge about the importance of environmental conditions in animal production, environmental control systems (temperature control, humidity, gases and dust). It is intended that at the end of the UC students will be able to conceive and design environmental control systems, in particular ventilation, cooling, heating and lighting.
Planning environmental control systems that respond in an integrated way to issues of animal welfare, profitability and sustainability of production systems and environment. Propose applications based on these systems. Characterize, design and select types of facilities and environmental control systems suitable for different livestock species. Evaluate the solutions and proceed to choose the most appropriate for each situation.

Contents

1. Environment and animal production
• Physiological reactions and adaptation to adverse environments
• Influence of environmental factors on the animal performances and welfare.
2. Phases of a project.
3. Planning of animal housings
• Aspects related with legislation (welfare and environmental protection)
• Aspects related with the construction (localization, orientation, dimensions and quantification, layout)
• Aspects related with production systems
• Animal housing, environmental comfort and energy consumption
• Waste management.
4. Environmental control f animal buildings
• Energy and mass balances
• Construction materials. Thermal insulation
• Ventilation: temperature, humidity and air quality
• Natural and artificial lighting
• Heating, cooling and energy saving systems

Teaching Methods

Teaching:

During the classes a theoretical exposition of the subjects will be conducted followed by the resolution of practical exercises. Students will develop design work that will allow the integration of the different subjects presented.

Evaluation:

The evaluation will consist of a writen test (WT) and group work (GW) that will be presented and discussed in the class. If the student fall in the writen test (classification below 8 values), a written examination (WE) can be realised.
Final classification (FC) is calculated as: FC= 0,5WT+ 0,5GW or FC= 0,5 or FC= 0,5WE + 0,5GW
Both, the classificaton of the GW and the FC should to be up of 10 values, and also the classification of WE should to be up of 8 values
