The present curricular unit aims to address and analyse important issues related to the European Union and International Security.

Learning Goals

The present course unit is developed as a theoretical framework to increase the knowledge on the positioning of the European Union (EU), in matters of security regarding International Relations. The programme is designed to provide students with a solid basis for research, exploring the main concepts involving the promotion of an EU security culture regarding the complex challenges of security in international relations in a Globalised World, as well as the achievement of international peace and security as a central core for the study of International Relations.

The European institutional structure - theoretical context
Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP)
Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP)
The EU's strategic position
The EU and its neighbouring countries
The EU and other main global actors: USA, Russia, China, Emerging Powers
The EU and international organisations in relation to international security
The European Global Strategy: Current and future challenges

Teaching Methods

Four pedagogical models are used in the methodological framework to consolidate the knowledge and enhance the motivation of learners:
1. Theoretical analysis;
2. Practical sessions to discuss issues of development;
3. Analysis of subjects by reading texts and documents;
4. Lecturer’s support in the consolidation of the study.
The assessment includes one practical initiation work on research including between 3000 and 5000 words.
