Learning Goals

'Data Processing and Analysis' main goal is to provide students with the fundamental theoretical and empirical principles which underpinned the processing, analysis and interpretation of data, aiming a deeply understanding of tourism phenomena.
On completion of this unit successfully, students will be able to: a) Present and critically discuss the theoretical principles which underpinned the data processing and analysis; b) Present, distinguish and evaluate, in context, the use of the most appropriate methodologies for the analysis of available databases, indicators and data; c) Correctly apply the principles structuring early steps in analysis; d) Present the major stages of exploration of the material; e) Use specific software to data storage, management and analysis; f) Apply the basic principles for the presentation of results, organization and writing up of scientific reports.


I. Fundamentals of Data Processing and Analysis
1.1 Data as social and scientific construction; 1.2 The place of data processing and analysis in the research process; 1.3 The data processing and analysis applied to research in tourism; 1.4 Sources of information, databases and literature; 1.5 Methodological pluralism and triangulation: limitations and complementarities of qualitative and quantitative paradigms.
II. Quantitative and Qualitative Methods of Data Analysis
2.1 The Statistical Analysis; 2.1.1 Analysis of Tourism Statistics; 2.1.2 Analysis of Surveys; 2.2 The Qualitative Content Analysis; 2.2.1 Content Analysis of Documents
2.2.2 Categorial Analysis of face-to face Interviews
III. Presentation of research results
3.1 Organization and writing up of scientific reports.

Teaching Methods

Teaching Methodology:
• Expository method, using audiovisual media and indication of general and specific bibliography, in theoretical classes presenting the theoretical, analytical and methodological guidelines of the discipline and systematization and problematization of the syllabus.
• Active method in theoretical-practical classes organized around individual or collective application exercises, using the indicated software.
• Interrogative method of encouraging active participation by students.
• On the Moodle platform, pedagogical content, supporting bibliographic references and study guidance sheets are available.

1. Continuous Assessment:
2 Written tests (25%+25%) + 2 Group work (25%+25%) (minimum grade 8 points in each of the assessment elements) + 75% attendance (except for special regimes)

Written test - 100% + 75% attendance (except for special regimes)
