Learning Goals

The goal is to promote a solid and encompassing perspective of the general continuum electromechanics principles from rheology up to the general balance laws, including fluid and solid behavior. A view from the mesoscale up to the macroscopic scale is provided.
Also aimed is an approach based on rigour and appreciation of the theories of continua: Electromagnetism, Heat transfer and Mechanics, including their complete coupling and constitutive inequalities.
This course has the objective of coherently link several of the Physics branches traditionally treated separately, but which the new challenges in engineering demand to unite. Therefore it is an engineering course, with foundations in the Classical Physics, updated with the new advances, but in which the language and objectives are the establishment of a theoretical basis for the description of engineering Multiphysics problems.

Contents

The constitution of matter and the continuum hypothesis. Phenomena of piezoelectricity, electrostriction and magnetostriction, among others.
Mechanics of continuous media. Eulerian and Lagrangian descriptions, deformation measures and rates. Distributed forces and couples, measures of stress. Objectivity. Balance laws for the mass, momentum and energy in the integral and local form. Thermodynamics.
Electrodynamics: The notions of charge, current and electric and magnetic fields. Maxwell equations in the integral and differential form and the electroquasistatic (EQS) and magnetoquasistatic (MQS) approximations. Extension to the presence of matter, electrical and magnetic macroscopic forces applied over the matter. Electromagnetic radiation.
Constitutive models: Thermal, elastic, plastic, viscoelastic, fluid, electrical behaviour and its combinations.
Equations of the electromagnetic continuum. Specializations for some cases of solids and fluids.

Teaching Methods

Lectures and tutoring, with each student being responsible for reading the bibliography advised by the teacher.
For some topics there may be seminars focused in specific points of the course program.
Evaluation: Homework along the semester with final discussion.
