Learning Goals

This course gives an introduction to the discipline of jazz arranging, This is done by creating arrangements for large ensembles with emphasis on the following topics:
- Learning the advanced terminology of arrangement
- Analysis of big band arrangements
- Development of structural parts of a jazz theme
- Writing and invention of additional structural parts of a jazz theme
- Advanced notation for rhythm section and woodwind suits
- Mechanical harmoniziation of 4-5 voices
- Notation of jazz phrasing
- Instrumentation for big band
The arrangements of the students develop gradually from the first idea in the beginning of the semestre until the complete arrangement at the end of the semester.

Contents

- Introduction to the big band in general, 5 concepts of big band.
- Analizing the structura of a big band arrangement (analysis from scores and audios).
- Phrasing and articulation in large jazz ensembles
- Harmonization of melodies for 4 voices using different techniques.
- Big band sections and their typical harmonization.
- Counterpoint lines and kicks as a response.
- Shout chorus and sax special chorus
- Introduction, Interlude, end, backings and vamps.
- Variation (of melody, harmony, rhythm, style, instrumentation, ...), the creation of tension in an arrangement.
- Open lesson, evaluation of the work done by the students..
- Editing the score and the parts
- Reduction of an big band arrangement to an arrangement for small ensemble.
- Preparation of the exam in the end of the semester.

Student´s works:
-1 full big band arrangement of 3-4 minutes duration including theme, short solos and a shout chorus of 30
seconds duration.
-1 reduction of a big band arrangement for small ensemble

Teaching Methods

- Theoretical and practical education by using examples of music in audio and video.
- Learning by practical experimentation of music examples with live instruments (horns and piano). In the middle of the semestre it is customary to have an additional with the Jazz Orchestra of the University of Évora (OJUE), where students can experience their work written in the lessons.
- Theoretical education through literature and music scores (recommended reading at home and sinopsis ring of the material in the lessons)
- Feedback of student work through explanation and rectification during classes and by internet. This system requires a regular delivery of work of the students.

Evaluation:
- Presence in lesson (20%),
- Exam at the end of the semestre (20%),
- Homework to be delivered (60%)
