Learning Goals

The aim of this unit is to introduce and develop Jazz arrangements and compositions, through the writing of arrangements for large ensembles, with emphasis on the following topics:
- Learning of advanced arrangement terminology
- Analysis of big band arrangements
- Writing and invention of additional structural parts of a jazz theme
- Development of structural parts from a Jazz theme
- Notation of jazz phrasing
- Instrumentation for big band
Students arrangements will ocupy their work gradually all over the semester.

Contents

- Introduction to big band, 5 big band musical concepts.
- Structure of a big band arrangement (score and audio analysis).
- Phrasing and articulation in large Jazz ensembles
- Melody harmonizations (eg subject) for four voices
- Different harmonization techniques.
- The big band sections and its harmonization.
- Counterpoint lines and answering kicks.
- Shout, Chorus and Special sax.
- Introduction, Interlude, Final, Backing, Vamps.
- Variations (Melodie, harmony, rhythm, style, instrumentation, ...) and musical tension in an arrangement.
- Evaluation of the work already done.
- The phrasing and language.
- Score editing
- Score reduction for small ensemble.
- Other ways of arrangement reductions.
- Exam preparation.

Work planning:
- 1 Full big band arrangement of 3-4 minutes of duration, with short solos and 30 seconds of shout chorus.
- 1 Reduction of a big band arrangement for small ensemble (quintet / sextet)

Teaching Methods

- Learning by practical experimentation of music examples with live instruments (horns and piano).
- Theoretical education through literature and music scores (recommended reading at home and sinopsis ring of the material in the lessons)
- Feedback of student work through explanation and rectification during classes and by internet. This system requires a regular delivery of work of the students.

Evaluation:
- Presence in lesson (20%),
- Exam at the end of the semestre (20%),
- Homework to be delivered (60%)
