Learning Goals

The course of Economics of Culture aims to contribute to the understanding of the importance and role of
culture and heritage in the economic analysis. And provide a theoretical and analytical framework derived
from the economics to support the planning and management of territories’ development strategies to
safeguard and protect, but also promote and monetize, culture, heritage and the characteristics of the
places. This course seeks to ensure the following core competencies: (i) A solid understanding of the
spatial dimension of the functioning of economic activity and its implications on the performance of the
economy of countries and of regions and cities;( ii) The domain of the theoretical framework, and the
methodologies and relevant practical applications of economic theory with regard to the economics of
culture, and (iii) the domain of the methodologies and diagnostic procedures, in a place based approach
for specific territorial problems and realities.

7. The economy of culture in Portugal and in the European Union.
8. Public policies for culture and heritage.

Teaching Methods

The teaching model and the evaluation system of this curricular unit are defined in order to ensure a solid
connection between its theoretical and applied/practical components. In addition to the classes, which are
theoretical and practical, a practical work should be developed by students within the regime of
continuous assessment. In this practical work, students should apply to a specific local or regional
territory, a diagnosis and a characterization focused on culture and heritage. The evaluation scheme of this
unit is as follows: a) On a continuous assessment regime: A written test weight of 40% and a practical
weight of 60 % in the final grade of the unit. The system of continuous assessment is organized so that it is
ensured, to students, monitoring attendance in and online; b) Regime of examination: A written test (
examination ) with a weight of 100 % on the final grade of the unit. In the written examination is also
evaluated the practical component of the unit.
