The course is based on SD principles and aims is to provide competences to embrace a comprehensive approach of ecological/environmental, socio-economic, institutional and political perspectives.

Learning Goals

Provide students with the knowledge and tools necessary to an integrated approach in spatial planning processes.
The emphasis is given to the importance of taken into account the different actors in the process. Interdisciplinary is taken as a first step to a successful process, involving several disciplines (landscape architecture, architecture, engineering (bioengineer, civil, environment, ...), geography, economy, sociology,...), according to the paradigm of sustainability.

Contents

1. Spatial planning process:
1.1. Introduction to theories and their evolution;
1.2. Basic concepts;
1.3. Planning System in Portugal - tools for land use planning and management;
1.4. Public participation in Spatial planning.
2. Evaluation and public decision: notions of Evaluation. Multicriteira decision aid methodology.
3. Potentialities and constraints for the future of spatial planning in Portugal.

Teaching Methods

Students should have specific readings to introduce each topic of the program. In class, these topics are explained and practical examples are shown, in order to consolidate the knowledge that students acquired with the previous readings.

Evaluation: One essay about a chosen topic (A), and 1 written theoretical test (B). As an alternative, a final examination - written (C) and oral (D), both obligatory.
