Learning Goals

1. To foster compositional (Composition) and artistic performance, in solo or ensemble settings (Interpretation/Jazz).
2. To consolidate notions of stylistic adequacy and performance practices.
3. To deepen notions of ergonomics and health applied to the curricular unit.
4. To develop knowledge of didactic materials adapted to the level of 5th to 9th school year (1st to 5th grade) in the specialization area of the student.
5. To reflect upon the pedagogical qualities of the repertoire included in the Instrument/Composition/Jazz teaching programmes actually in use in Portugal, from the 1st to the 5th grade.
6. To dominate, from an analytical and/or technical/artistic instrumental/vocal standpoint, specific musical works/practices from the student’s specialization area adapted to the level of 1st to 5th grade.
7. To develop pedagogical strategies for the approach of the musical parameters harmony, timbre and melody in the context of the teaching and learning situation.

Contents

Study of spec works of the reper and ensemble music proj (Interp/Jazz)/realization of compositional proj (Composition);
Knowledge of specific techniques, didactic mat and reper (1st-5th grade):
A)WINDS: fingering/piston/slide technique; sound develop; register control
B)STRINGS: bowing; position changes (l.h.); dynamic control; vibrato; harmonics; hand indep
C)ACCORDION: hand indep, phrasing and dynamics
D)PIANO: sound develop and motor coord; scales, arpeggios, ornaments; phrasing
E)GUITAR: nail use (r.h.); motricity/hand coord; knowledge of the guitar’s neck; fret board and legati a due (l.h.); positions
F)PERCUSSION/DRUMS: Open+closed roll; sound prodc techniques on large perc. instruments; lower limbs coordination and polyrhythmic independence
G)VOICE: posture on stage, phrasing on breath, using of consonants for sound emission
H)COMPOSITION: developed knowledge of melody, harmony, form and instrumentation
I)JAZZ The Blues form, concepts of melodic and harmonic improvisation

Teaching Methods

Definition of individual program and bibliography. Realization of chamber/ensemble mus proj OR partic in orchestral project (Performance). Individual/group interactive lessons. Complementary activities. Continuous Evaluation: student performance: 20% written essay (and presentation) about didactic materials or repertoires (1st-5th grade level): 20%public exam before a jury:
Interpretation: performance (ca. 40 min.) including standard concert repertoire (25%), chamber/orchestral music (25%) and didactic repertoire (1st-5th grade; 10%) Composition: compositional project reflecting the semester’s work - 60%. Final Evaluation:written essay (and presentation) about didactic materials or repertoires (1st-5th grade level): 30%; public exam before a jury: Interp/Jazz: performance (ca. 40 min.), including standard concert repertoire (30%), chamber/orchestral music (30%) and didactic repertoire (1st-5th grade; 10%).Composition: compositional project reflecting the semester’s work: 70%
