Learning Goals

Foster skills in creative writing; - Encourage (re) reading and (re) writing;
-Develop the skills of critical reading of some narrative and poetic texts, focusing on their dominant processes; -
Encourage the production of creative texts from the literary "models".

Contents

1. Introduction to Creative Writing: Writers Testimonies.
2. Critical analysis and practical production of narrative texts with special emphasis on the short story.
3. The construction of intrigue, characters, and the creation of atmospheres (scenarios and themes). Narrative points of view.
4. The micro or “flash” fiction.
5. Hybrid narrative texts.
6. Writing from a pictorial or musical motif.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical-practical classes although the practical component is more accentuated so as to include the critical interpretation of the texts under analysis and the continuous production of texts from the examples studied.
Theoretical-practical classes presupposing oral discussion of the texts proposed for each class.
Evaluation in the continuous (encouraged) and final modalities according to the Academic Regulations of the University of Évora and the Regulation of the DLL.

Assessment


According to the Regulamento Interno da Universidade de Évora and the Regulamento de Avaliação de Conhecimentos – Critérios definidos pelo Departamento de Linguística e Literaturas 2015/2016.


Mandatory attendance - Continuous Assessment: 75% (Ordem de Serviço nº3 ECS/2012); Final Assessment: 30% (nº4, Artº. 17 e cap.VI do REI); Mixt Assessment: 50% Students under Regimes especiais (nº3, Artº. 6 e cap.VI do REI) are exempted from the above mentioned percentages.


 


I - Continuous Assessment:  


1st frequency: Written test: 50%. 2nd frequency: Written test: 40%.


In the class, creative writing texts: 10%. 


Note: Continuous Assessment require achieving grade 08 in the writing test. The grades are only rounded off when registered in the pauta.


 


II - Exam:


     Final exam: Written test: 100%  


     Recurso Exam: Written test: 100%


 


III – Mixt Assessment:


    1 frequency: Written test: 80%


    Fictional Project: 20%
