This curricular unit aims at developing the students’ English language skills by providing opportunities to engage in communicative activities in written and oral reception, production and interaction, within the descriptors identified in the CEFR level C1.

Learning Goals

(CEFR Level C1) Objectives: understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning; express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions; use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Competences: can give clear, detailed descriptions and presentations; can write clear, well-structured texts of complex subjects, expanding and supporting points of view and rounding off with an appropriate conclusion, can understand enough to follow extended speech on abstract and complex topics beyond his/her own field, though he/she may need to confirm occasional details; can understand in detail lengthy, complex texts, whether or not they relate to his/her own area of speciality; can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously; can express him/herself with clarity and precision, relating to the addressee flexibly and effectively.

Spoken interaction: role play (expressing thoughts and feelings)
Written interaction: exchanging correspondence (e.g. complaint, expressing thoughts and feelings - 'Letter to the Editor', 'Dear Abby', etc.)
Grammar: the passive; articles and nouns; determiners and quantifiers; pronouns, substitution and ellipsis.

Teaching Methods

According to the descriptors established for the level C1 in the CEFR, the methodology adopted will focus on the acquisition and development of oral and written skills (production, reception and interaction), grammar practice and vocabulary enhancement: direct exposure to authentic use of language (through videos, written texts - newspapers, magazines, etc. - Internet, CD-ROM, among others); direct participation in communicative interaction; presentations, explanations, exercises/exploitation activities; translation (native language/foreign language/native language); individual, pair and group working; contribution to formal and informal discussions; guided study; autodidactically, by self-study.
Students may choose between two modes of assessment:
(1) Continuous assessment: a. Written quiz (35%); b. Oral quiz (25%); c. Assignments, throughout the semester, in and
at home (40%);
(2) Exam: a. Written exam (60%); b. Oral exam (40%).
