Presentation

The Latin I course provides students with the knowledge of a classical language, which, in addition to being the origin of several modern European languages, is recognized as a language of culture.

1. To acquire critical and accurate knowledge, on the structure of the Latin language.
2. To recognize and analyze elements of Latin morphology and syntax on Latin texts,.
3. To acquire Latin vocabulary and explore its influence on the vocabulary of modern European languages.
4. To read and understand Latin texts of moderate difficulty.
5. To learn about aspects of Roman civilization, gathered from the analyzed texts, and recognize its influence in various fields of the European culture.

Contents

1. Phonetics and Prosody (Latin alphabet and “restored Latin pronunciation”; Latin accentuation; syllabic and vocalic duration; phonetic phenomena).
2. Morphology (Notions of root/radical, theme, linking vowel, characteristic, verbal and nominal desinences).
2.2. Inflection of nouns:
2.2.1. Nouns with vowel stem.
2.2.2. Nouns with consonant stem.
2.3. Inflection of the verb:
2.3.1. Active tenses of the indicative mode and active present subjunctive of the four conjugations and verb -sum.
2.3.2. Nominal forms of the verbs.
2.4.1. First and second declension adjective.
2.5. Inflection of pronouns.
2.6. Prepositions and their cases.
2.7. Circumstantial adverbs and interrogative adverbs
3. Syntax:
3.1. Fundamental of grammatical analysis (cases and functions)
3.2. Interrogative clause;
3.3. Subordinate relative clause;
3.4. Subordinate infinitive clause.
3.5. Circumstantial complements.

Teaching Methods

Lecturing and analysis. Reading, analysis and translation. Case study. Exercises. Group work. Continuous
assessment: written assessment (50%) and other elements proposed along the semester (50%). Final assessment: written exam (100%).
